CITY Summer Leadership Camp

The C.I.T.Y. Summer Leadership School is an intensive training program, designed to create an environment where leadership and life building values can be instilled into teenagers in a creative, impactful and fun-filled way.

It is an annual camp scheduled conveniently during the summer holiday, as a way to culminate the C.I.T.Y programs that ran across different schools in the present academic session.

The primary objective of the summer program is to develop the leadership potential in teenagers by training/ mentoring them on the principles and values that would help them excel in life. It offers a fun and safe environment where campers can learn new things, discover themselves, and imbibe the culture of leadership.

Camp Activities

Classroom Trainings

Classroom training is focused on C.I.T.Y’s key thematic areas. This includes Leadership, Personal Mastery and Transformation, Innovation, creativity and Entrepreneurship, Educational Excellence and National Development Consciousness. Other topics covered in addition to the thematic areas are etiquette and personal branding, sex education, relationships and conflict resolution.

Summer activities also include both indoor and outdoor sporting activities. These games include football, volleyball, chess, scrabble and other action games. Our games are designed with a focus on building team spirit and fostering teamwork among participants.

This involves hands-on training in bead-making, bag making, pastries, tie and dye, photography, public speaking and many more. It aims to promote vocational aptitude and provide a platform where teenagers can engage in any craft of their choice. The participants are usually involved in at least one workshop session at a time.

Movie Show

Every year, a movie is selected for screening. The movie is usually in line with the theme for the year. Over the years, we have shown movies such as Akeelah and the bee, The Lorax, The Gabby Douglas Story and Spare parts. All movies shown are age appropriate and is aimed at driving our message through storytelling and interesting visuals and character that the teenagers can relate with.

Career Fair

The Career fair is aimed at exposing participants to various careers and guiding them to make the decision that suits them. It is an expository program where various professionals interact with participants and share their personal experiences as well as fact-based information on their various careers.

The career fair has been so successful that at the end of each program, we have many participants with a clear perspective of their career choice and what they would want to become in life.

Speak for change: The Speak for change competition is aimed at driving research and advocacy in the participants. The competition was done at team/squad level. Each squad is given a topic to research on and deliver a compelling speech to drive positive change. Topics usually cover social, political, economic and environmental themes.

Case Challenge: The purpose of the Case challenge competition is to stimulate the minds of the leaders to think critically and proffer creative and innovative solutions to a given challenge. The technicality of the case challenge spurs an overflow of creativity and resourcefulness in the participants.

For instance, the 2015 case challenge was focused on building a social enterprise that offered a solution to world hunger. The participants were also given the task of using the business model canvas to pitch their idea/solution.

What Happens After Summer Camp?

After the CITY Summer Camp, there is the C.I.T.Y Action Project (CAP). C.I.T.Y. Action Project is a platform for teenagers to proffer practical solutions to problems in their communities and take part in nation building.

The main idea of CAP is: every teenager that attends our summer leadership camp is encouraged to do a change project in their schools or communities and to lead other teenagers. CAP offers an outlet for the teenagers to put into practice all they have learned and accept responsibility for a cause or for a people.
